Groundwork Elizabeth, working along with the Federal Government, the State of N.J., the City of Elizabeth, Union County, the community and the private sector, is the lead organization in the planning, design, and construction of the Elizabeth River Trail, a 2 ½ mile trail that will parallel the Elizabeth River from S. Broad St. to the Arthur Kill.

Long a dream of residents, businesses, and government, construction of this trail will fit into the long term vision of connecting people with the natural environment within a densely populated industrial area. Mattano Park designer Frederick Law Olmsted’s vision was always to incorporate naturalistic features into urban landscape settings. An improved extended recreational trail along the Elizabeth River will provide local residents access to nature right outside their doors. At the same time the trail will offer visitors information about ecological restoration plans for the river, historical and cultural signage, and will function as a laboratory for schoolchildren and other community groups to encourage them to become environmental stewards of this valuable resource. The trail will tie into a regional network of Greenways previously identified by National and State Environmental Groups.
