

Event Calendar for Groundwork Elizabeth, Non-profit organization dedicated to improving the physical environment for the City of Elizabeth:
1) Master Gardeners of Union County work with Groundwork Elizabeth to revitalize traffic island: Elizabeth, N.J., Tuesday, May 18th, 2004On Tuesday, May 18th, the Union County Master Gardeners, under the direction of Cindy Coppa, will work with Groundwork Elizabeth and the City of Elizabeth to improve the landscaping of the Elmora Hills Traffic Island, the center of the Elmora Hills section of Elizabeth. The event will be hosted by Groundwork Elizabeth, a new non-profit organization whose mission it is to improve the physical environment of the City of Elizabeth, and to involve the community in its work
Mayor J. Christian Bollwage will address the community at 10 a.m. Members of the National Park Service, which with the City of Elizabeth are the founding funders of Groundwork Elizabeth, will be present, as will be members of the public
2)Tour de Elizabeth attracts Bicyclists from surrounding communities: Elizabeth, N.J. Sunday, May 23, 2004On Sunday, May 23rd, the First Annual Tour de Elizabeth, a 15 mile leisurely ride around Historic Elizabeth, will be held. Up to 200 riders are expected. There will be a raffle at the end of the Tour, as well as music, and samplings of food from restaurants in the area.
Entrants will pay a $15 fee on the day of the ride. Jonathan Phillips, Chairman of the Tour de Elizabeth Bicycle Committee expects riders of every age and ability. "We have some seniors, and a few folks riding tandems", said Phillips, "They will all be escorted by the Elizabeth Police Department, minimizing contact with motor vehicles".
3)City of Elizabeth will "Cool Down" with help from 1,500 Trees Elizabeth, N.J., Wednesday, June 2nd, 2004Recently, the City of Elizabeth learned that it will be the recipient of 1,500 trees, courtesy the Board of Public Utilities and the New Jersey Tree Foundation, a division of the Department of Environmental Protection. Through an arrangement facilitated by Groundwork Elizabeth, a non-profit dedicated to improving Elizabeth's physical environment, 26 trees will be planted and a ceremony will take place at 12 p.m. Wednesday, June 2nd, at the corner of Loomis St. and First Avenue in the heart of the City's Peterstown District. Mayor J. Christian Bollwage, The Commissioner of the DEP, the President of the New Jersey Tree Foundation, members of the Board of Public Utilities, Board members from Groundwork Elizabeth, the Principal and Teachers from Cleveland Middle School, and the public are expected to attend. Planting of these trees will reduce the amount of heat generated along City streets and will reduce energy costs to the residents and business community.
