Groundwork is working with the community through continued environmental programming which will educate the community as well as make objective environmental improvements. In 2009, the program entitled “Our City Elizabeth” had teamed students with educators, the private sector, and the community at large as the team visited brownfield sites, monitored pollution, took pictures (PhotoVoice Program) and developed community suggestions for the reuse of such properties in restoring them to full use. As an outgrowth of the lessons learned during “Our City Elizabeth”, for 2010 Groundwork Elizabeth is working with the City of Elizabeth, the National Park Service, the Green Team, and the community at large to develop The Elizabeth Nature Center. This site will be based at the Peterstown Community Center, and will afford the underserved community a place to learn, interact with Nature within an urban center.
